Northern Alberta Fishing Report — Sunday, September 27, 2026

Northern Alberta

Overview

Northern Alberta rivers and lakes are currently in excellent late-summer conditions, with many flows at or near summer fishing levels. This makes for great fishing opportunities in rivers such as the Clearwater and Athabasca. Be mindful of wind conditions, which can affect fly fishing presentations, especially on lakes.

River & Lake Conditions

Clearwater River near Fort McMurray

Flows are steady at 65.7 m³/s, sitting comfortably in the low range of normal for this time of year. With flows near summer levels, walleye, northern pike, and goldeye fishing is excellent in slower water and eddies.

Athabasca River at Hinton

Flows are decreasing at 148 m³/s, slightly under summer median flows. This decline makes the conditions quite favorable for targeting rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, and arctic grayling, especially in tributary confluences.

Peace River at Dunvegan Bridge

Although currently above normal flows at 1530 m³/s, the river is falling, which means walleye and northern pike activity will pick up in back channels and slower-moving water.

Weather Impact by Area

Northern Rivers (Clearwater, Athabasca, Peace)

In the Fort McMurray and Athabasca areas, expect wind speeds between 15-20 km/h WSW. This may make small dry flies difficult to use, particularly in the afternoon as gusts increase. For spin anglers, check the wind to position for optimal casting and drift.

Peace River

At Dunvegan and Fort Vermilion, wind speeds are higher, reaching up to 22 km/h. Focus on sheltered areas along riverbanks or behind natural barriers to counteract wind challenges. Use heavier lures or baits for deeper presentation.

Hatch Activity & Fly Fishing

Clearwater River

Midge hatches are highly active. For nymphing, use zebra midges #18-22 below indicators in pools and slow runs. Dry fly fishing with small imitations is possible, but the wind could challenge your casts. Streamers like woolly buggers can work in deeper, slower water sections.

Athabasca River at Hinton

Midge activity is strong, providing excellent nymphing conditions. Employ tight-line nymphing or an indicator rig with hare's ear #14-16 or pheasant tails. For streamers, consider muddler minnows in deeper pools to attract large grayling and trout.

Spin & Bait Fishing

Clearwater & Athabasca Rivers

For walleye and pike, use bright inline spinners like Blue Fox Vibrax or 1/8 oz jigs tipped with live bait in eddies and deep pools. Goldeye can be targeted using small spoons and spinners with a vigorous retrieve to entice surface strikes.

Recent Stocking

Two Lakes (South Two Lake)

Recently stocked with Westslope Cutthroat Trout. With prevailing winds from the WSW, position yourself on the east side for effective casting. Use small spinners or PowerBait to attract newly stocked fish.

Top Picks Today

Clearwater River near Fort McMurray

  • Fly: Use midge patterns (#18-22) in nymph setups for brown trout and goldeye.
  • Spin: 1/8 oz spinners and small spoons for pike in slough areas and back eddies.

Athabasca River at Hinton

  • Fly: Target rainbow trout and grayling with hare's ear nymphs and muddler minnows in deeper runs.
  • Spin: Vibrax spinners or small Rapalas for grayling near confluences and structure.

Peace River at Dunvegan Bridge

  • Fly: Streamers like woolly buggers for pike and deep nymphs for grayling.
  • Spin: Large spoons and spinners for pike in sloughs and backwaters as water clears.

Safety & Regulations

  • Exercise caution especially where the Peace River remains above normal flows; evaluate conditions and fish from safe vantage points.
  • Bull trout are catch-and-release only throughout all Alberta waters.
  • Spawning seasons overlap in several species. Avoid crossing redds and do not target fish on spawning gravel.
  • Seasons and closures vary by water body and species — always verify at albertaregulations.ca before fishing.
