Data Sources & Disclaimer
AB Fish Report aggregates publicly available data from government and open-data sources. This page details every data source, applicable licences, AI disclosure, and accuracy limitations.
Fishing Regulations
Alberta Sportfishing Regulations are published by Sports Scene Publications Inc. on behalf of the Government of Alberta. AB Fish Report does not reproduce the regulations content. Zone hints on lake and river pages are starting points only — always verify the official source before fishing:
albertaregulations.caAccuracy Disclaimer
All data on AB Fish Report is provided for informational purposes only. Water flow and level data comes from automated monitoring stations and may contain sensor errors, data gaps, or transmission delays. Weather data is from numerical forecast models and may not reflect actual local conditions.
Daily fishing reports are produced automatically from structured conditions data and may contain errors, inaccuracies, or outdated information. They are not a substitute for local knowledge, in-person assessment, or advice from a qualified guide.
AB Fish Report assumes no liability for decisions made based on data or reports displayed on this site, including property damage, injury, or regulatory violations. Always exercise sound judgment on the water and check official sources for safety-critical decisions (flows, ice, advisories, and closures).
AI-Generated Reports
Daily fishing reports are synthesized by OpenAI from live WSC hydrometric data, weather observations, hatch records, stocking events, and advisory briefs. Reports are published automatically around 4:30 AM MDT and include a generation timestamp. No human editorial review occurs before publication.
AI output can hallucinate or misstate facts. Treat reports as a planning aid, not a definitive guide. User emails and cookie data are not sent to AI providers.
Hatch Chart Content & Images
Hatch charts on AB Fish Report are an original compilation synthesized from peer-reviewed Alberta entomology, open-government datasets, and western North American scientific literature. Factual data (species names, emergence timing, temperature ranges) is cited to published sources; descriptive text is written by AB Fish Report.
Insect photographs use only CC0, Public Domain, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, or team-owned (Original) images. We do not use non-commercial (NC) or no-derivatives (ND) licensed images. Attribution for each photo appears on the insect detail page and in our image registry.
Hatch timing is informational only. Emergence windows vary with elevation, flow, and local conditions. Estimated water temperatures are modeled from air temperature and discharge — not live probe measurements.
Data Refresh Schedule
- River flows — approximately every 3 hours
- Weather — approximately every 2 hours
- Fish stocking — daily (when Alberta publishes an updated PDF)
- Daily reports — once per day after upstream data sync
Data Sources & Licences
River water levels and discharge (flow) data
Data Source: Environment and Climate Change Canada
Hydrometric data from the national network of water level and discharge monitoring stations. AB Fish Report syncs gauges about every three hours.
Weather conditions, temperature, wind, precipitation
Weather data provided by Environment and Climate Change Canada
Referenced under ECCC open-data terms where applicable.
Current weather conditions and forecasts
Weather forecast data by Open-Meteo.com
Primary weather API. AB Fish Report refreshes station weather about every two hours.
Fish stocking records — species, location, counts, dates (PDF report)
Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Alberta
Published by Alberta Forestry and Parks. AB Fish Report syncs the current-year PDF daily.
River advisory and basin information (where displayed)
Alberta River Basins — Government of Alberta
Advisory summaries may be included in daily reports. Always check the official site for current advisories.
Lake depth contours and bathymetry (where displayed on lake pages and map)
Bathymetry © Alberta Geological Survey
Used for lake depth maps and catalog metadata. Not a substitute for on-water navigation.
Zone references, species codes, and links — not full regulation text
Regulations published at albertaregulations.ca
AB Fish Report does not reproduce the official regulations guide. Zone lookups are for convenience only.

Aquatic insect hatch timing, species presence, and temperature ranges
Hatch data compiled by AB Fish Report from peer-reviewed research and open-government sources
Species presence and emergence timing drawn from Clifford (Aquatic Invertebrates of Alberta), Boerger & Clifford 1975, Townsend & Pritchard 1998, and other cited publications. Descriptions are original synthesis. Insect photos use CC0/CC-BY or team-owned images only.
Historical water temperature ranges for emergence context (air2stream model)
Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada
Used for typical water-temperature context on hatch charts. Live estimates use air temperature and flow — not measured water temperature.
