Central AlbertaOverview
Today, many central Alberta rivers are experiencing rising flows due to ongoing onset runoff conditions. While larger systems may be discoloured and challenging, tailwaters and spring creeks like the Raven River are maintaining stable conditions, offering the most consistent fishing opportunities today.
River & Lake Conditions
- Fallentimber Creek: Currently at 3.8 m³/s, with flows rising sharply. It's slightly above the summer norm but not alarming yet. Focus on bank fishing, avoiding areas of strong current.
- Red Deer River — Headwaters: Flows have exceeded typical spring high water at 34.5 m³/s and are rising fast, leading to discoloured conditions. Consider postponing your trip till flows recede below the seasonal median (~18 m³/s).
- Red Deer River — Dickson Tailwaters: Running high at 71.5 m³/s with flows rising. With a historical upper range of 54.9 m³/s, it’s more productive to target tailwaters during lower water periods.
- Raven River: At 1.9 m³/s, it's near summer fishing levels. Stable flows make it a prime spot for technical dry-fly and nymph fishing, with long leaders recommended for stealth.
Weather Impact by Area
- Central Alberta: Temperatures are comfortable (12–24°C), but with wind gusts up to 39 km/h SE on Fallentimber Creek, small dry flies will be difficult to present. Opt for nymphs or streamers.
- Red Deer River Basin: Overcast conditions with temperatures ranging from 11–25°C. Rising water levels call for heavier gear and bolder presentations in side channels and eddies.
Hatch Activity & Fly Fishing
- Fallentimber Creek: Expect high midge and caddis activity. For nymphs, San Juan Worms and Hare's Ears sink to the bottom with shot placement mid-leader to get down quickly. If wind permits, dry fly enthusiasts should carry hoppers for bank-side action despite gusty conditions.
- Raven River: Green sedge caddis are hatching in abundance — an excellent evening dry-fly window. Nymphing with Rhyacophila larvae imitations works best during daylight.
Spin & Bait Fishing
- Red Deer River — Headwaters: Inline spinners such as Blue Fox Vibrax #2-3 will work best in back eddies as water continues to rise. Vibrant colors and weighted spinners are recommended for discoloured water.
- Dickson Tailwaters: For walleye, use Berkley Gulp Minnows on 3/8 oz jigs targeting slack water and eddies. Pike can be coaxed with large, bright spoons like the Mepps Pike Killer.
Recent Stocking
- Muskiki Lake: Stocked with Westslope Cutthroat Trout on June 17. Light wind today makes it perfect for taking advantage of the newly added stock.
- Considerable rise in Fallentimber's flows yet it remains fishable for stocked species given the season's weather and wind conditions.
Top Picks Today
- Raven River: Consistent levels and active green sedge hatch. Fly fish with an Elk Hair Caddis, or spin fish using ultra-light spinners for an excellent day on the water.
- North Ram River: Although flows are fast, targeting bull trout with large streamers remains effective by focusing efforts on deep pools.
Safety & Regulations
- Given rising water levels, exercise caution and prioritize bank and side channel fishing.
- Bull trout catching is catch-and-release only throughout Alberta.
- Many rivers are prone to high runoff currently, so verify regulations at albertaregulations.ca before fishing.
- Always avoid wading through spawning redds; preserve our future trout populations by steering clear of fish on the gravel.
