Northern Alberta Fishing Report — Thursday, July 9, 2026

Northern Alberta

Overview

Northern Alberta's rivers are experiencing elevated flows from continued spring runoff. Anglers should approach with caution as some areas remain high and discoloured. For those still eager to fish, focus on specific locations where flows are declining and conditions may improve shortly. Review area-specific regulations before heading out.

River & Lake Conditions

  • Clearwater River: Flow at 118 m³/s, slightly elevated and gradually falling. Water clarity is likely improving, presenting better opportunities for walleye and northern pike along with possible trout action.
  • Athabasca River at Hinton: At 507 m³/s, flows are rising rapidly, exceeding typical spring highs. Water will be fast and potentially discoloured; alternative waters are recommended.
  • Athabasca River at Athabasca: Flow is high at 1320 m³/s and declining. Fishing should focus on settled slack waters and backwaters.
  • Peace River at Fort Vermilion: Flows remain high at 3600 m³/s but are falling. Fish close to structure and slowwater zones.

Weather Impact by Area

  • Northern Rivers (Athabasca, Clearwater, Peace): Generally overcast skies with light drizzle in Hinton. Winds up to 17 km/h notably affect presentation on these open systems. Rising water levels add complexity to already high flows; focus on backwaters and protected areas.
  • Central Alberta (Pembina River): Overcast with modest winds under 13 km/h. Flows are dropping, improving water clarity, which may increase fish activity in side channels and slower stretches.

Hatch Activity & Fly Fishing

  • Clearwater River: Favorable hatches for midges and aquatic insects with potential for dry fly action as adults emerge. Nymphing with midge larvae (#18-26) in runs and pools using indicator setups is optimal.
  • Athabasca System: Given high flows, streamer fishing with bright patterns like Woolly Buggers in deeper runs can attract larger trout and pike avoiding turbulent currents.

Spin & Bait Fishing

For walleye and pike, focus on clearer arrivals at slack water areas using medium-sized spinnerbaits in bright colors. Goldeye may hold near surface feeding zones; try smaller spinners during calmer conditions. Still waters and lake edges will favor soft plastics and bright spoons, particularly in subdued light.

Recent Stocking

  • Emerald Lake: Recently stocked with brook trout. Light spinning gear with small spinners or PowerBait will attract active fish. Match wind considerations for casting.
  • Two Lakes (South Two Lake): Stocked with westslope cutthroat, an excellent chance to use attractor flies like Royal Wulff and stimulators, or small spoons for spin anglers.

Top Picks Today

1. Clearwater River: Improving clarity, potential for walleye in slackwaters. Fly: Midge nymph #18 under an indicator. Spin: Gold spoons, twitch intermittently.

2. Emerald Lake: Newly stocked brook trout promises action. Fly: Adams dry fly #14. Spin: Inline spinners #2 in bright silver.

3. Peace River at Fort Vermilion: Flows easing; expect pike nearer side channels. Fly: Large streamers with a slow retrieve. Spin: Large spoons like Mepps Pike Killer.

Safety & Regulations

Anglers must exercise caution with high water levels across many northern streams. Remember that bull trout are catch-and-release in all Alberta waters. Refrain from wading through known spawning zones during trout spawning periods to protect sensitive habitats. As always, check albertaregulations.ca for the latest rules and closures specific to your fishing destination.
