Northern Alberta Fishing Report — Monday, July 6, 2026

Northern Alberta

Overview

Northern Alberta rivers are experiencing high flows due to spring runoff, impacting fishing conditions. While flows are starting to decline in some areas, anglers should still exercise caution. Focus on slack water areas or consider the stocked lakes for a more productive fishing experience.

River & Lake Conditions

  • Clearwater River near Fort McMurray: Flows at 127 m³/s are slightly elevated but receding, offering potential for improving conditions. Target walleye, northern pike, and goldeye in the quieter bank areas.

  • Athabasca River at Hinton: Flow of 607 m³/s is above typical spring high water but falling. With the river clearing, tributary fishing for rainbow trout and grayling can improve.

  • Athabasca River below Fort McMurray: At 2460 m³/s, flows are very high and still rising. Focus on fishing from the bank at eddies and slow-moving pools.

  • Peace River at Dunvegan Bridge: Flows at 2830 m³/s are declining, providing opportunities in side channels and tributary mouths for pike and walleye.

Weather Impact by Area

  • Athabasca Region: Clear and moderate temperatures (10–21°C), although 39–43 km/h gusts in the afternoon may affect fly presentation. Opt for nymphing or streamers due to wind impacts.

  • Peace River at Dunvegan Bridge: Conditions are clear with gentle winds (up to 17 km/h SW). Ideal for targeting calmer areas early in the day while the water is clearing.

  • Clearwater River near Fort McMurray: Partly cloudy with light drizzle and gusty winds (up to 45 km/h W). Consider Spin and bait tactics better suited for these conditions.

Hatch Activity & Fly Fishing

  • Athabasca River at Hinton: Significant hatch activity including PMDs, Yellow Sally, and Grasshoppers. Nymph fishing is prime today with Pheasant Tails (#14-18) under an indicator in riffles.

  • Peace and Clearwater Rivers: High midge hatch activity should keep dry fly anglers interested. Use Blood Midges (#18-22) for nymphing in pools. Streamers like Woolly Buggers will perform well in murky water areas.

Spin & Bait Fishing

  • Clearwater & Athabasca Rivers: Inline spinners in silver or chartreuse and shallow-running crankbaits are recommended. Focus on eddies and slower water.

  • Peace River: For northern pike, consider large spoons and soft plastic swimbaits in weedy backwaters. Walleye can be targeted with 1/4 oz jigs tipped with twister tails.

Recent Stocking

  • Emerald Lake: Recently stocked with Brook Trout. Consider heading out with light spinners or fly setups using bead head nymphs.

  • Two Lakes (South Two Lake): Stocked with Westslope Cutthroat Trout. Ideal for fly anglers using attractor dry flies like #10-14 Royal Wulff and Adams.

Top Picks Today

  • Clearwater River: Shores near Fort McMurray are clearing; try nymphs and spin gear around back eddies for walleye and pike.

  • Emerald Lake: Freshly stocked brookies will eagerly take small spinners and flies. Fish the morning when less wind.

  • Two Lakes (South Two Lake): Target the newly stocked cutthroats with dry flies in the late morning when the wind eases.

Safety & Regulations

  • Flows in many rivers are elevated; exercise caution and fish from shore where it is safe.
  • Bull trout are catch-and-release only in all waters.
  • Turtled/pike spawn could overlap in streams, practice ethical fishing.
  • Always verify regulations for specific fishing locations and seasons at albertaregulations.ca.
