Southern Alberta Fishing Report — Sunday, May 24, 2026

Sunday, May 24, 2026
Southern Alberta

Overview

Spring runoff is significantly affecting many southern Alberta rivers, with higher flows and challenging conditions expected in mountain-fed water bodies. However, certain tailwaters and stocked lakes present excellent fishing opportunities today. Anglers should target these consistent and fishable stretches.

River & Lake Conditions

  • Bow River — Calgary Blue Ribbon: Flows are above normal at 161 m³/s, making wading dangerous. Optimal for experienced float trips. Focus efforts on bank edges and back eddies.
  • Bow River — Upper / Banff: Normal flows at 64.5 m³/s—accessible fishing conditions. Expect cutthroat and bull trout holding in deeper runs and pools.
  • Oldman River — Lower / Lethbridge: Near normal 35.4 m³/s flow allows for straightforward fishing access. Walleye are concentrated near structure and back eddies.
  • Elbow River: Below normal at 9.5 m³/s—beware of rapid flow changes. Cutthroat and browns are likely in pocket water and riffles.
  • Ghost River: Flowing at 2.0 m³/s with typical May flows—an inviting option for those looking to explore remote, small-stream cutthroat trout fishing.

Weather Impact by Area

Bow Valley / Foothills

Expect relatively calm conditions in the morning, with wind picking up to 25 km/h W in the afternoon, challenging for presenting small dry flies. The Bow River will have overcast skies with temps ranging from 10–23°C. Afternoon winds will make nymphing or streamers the preferred tactics.

Crowsnest Pass Region

Wind conditions are expected to hit 24 km/h W, making nymphing and streamers on the Crowsnest River more feasible than dry flies, despite the fantastic BWO activity. Temperatures will hover between 9–21°C, offering comfortable fishing conditions.

Central Alberta

With mild wind conditions, rivers like Red Deer and Oldman should have productive fishing, especially with active boosting BWO hatches. Temperatures are set to rise to 21°C, assisting mid-to-late day fish activity.

Hatch Activity & Fly Fishing

  • Bow River — Calgary: Boasting excellent BWO and moderate Grannom caddis hatches. Nymphing with Pheasant Tail Nymphs #18 or using dry caddis patterns #14-16 effectively target these hatches.
  • Crowsnest River: High BWO activity—dry flies can be effective when conditions calm, but nymphs (Pheasant Tail #18) remain essential.
  • Streamer Fishing: Effective in turbid or cooler water; Woolly Bugger #6-8 in olive/black is a versatile choice across all affected rivers today.

Spin & Bait Fishing

  • Bow River: Use Blue Fox Vibrax #2 or Mepps Aglia #3 for brown and rainbow trout, casting to edges and beneath bank structure.
  • Walleye on the Oldman River — Lower: Chartreuse 1/8 oz jigs tipped with minnows work well around back eddies and deep pools.
  • Stocked Lakes: Use PowerBait or small spinners like Panther Martin for freshly stocked trout in nearby ponds.

Recent Stocking

Mount Lorette Ponds has been stocked with both rainbow and Westslope cutthroat trout as of May 14. This creates an ideal opportunity for children and family-friendly fishing using spinners and PowerBait by shore near inflow areas for better success.

Top Picks Today

  • Bow River — Upper: With manageable flows, this stretch is great for targeting cutthroat trout—use Parachute Adams #16 for fly fishing and small Mepps spinners for spin anglers.
  • Oldman River — Lower: Near-average flows are excellent for walleye—try Clouser Minnows #6 or jig rigs for spin fishing.
  • Mount Lorette Ponds: Recently stocked with rainbows and cutthroats—use PowerBait or worms near inlets for freshly stocked fish.

Safety & Regulations

Rain-induced flow changes can occur swiftly—stay updated on conditions. Remember, bull trout are catch-and-release only across Alberta, and specific waters may have seasonal closures. Be mindful of native trout spawning areas, particularly avoiding streambed disturbance during these periods.
