Southern Alberta

Overview

Spring runoff is progressing across Southern Alberta, with many mountain streams running high and discoloured. Focus on tailwaters and stocked ponds where conditions are more favorable. The Bow River through Calgary is accessible but challenging at current levels — caution is advised.

River & Lake Conditions

  • Bow River — Upper / Banff: At 59.6 m³/s, it is near normal for this time of year but difficult for wading due to high glacial flows. Fish shorelines and slower water.
  • Bow River — Calgary Blue Ribbon: Running at 147.0 m³/s, above normal, making wading dangerous. Float trips are possible though caution is necessary. Focus on back eddies and deeper runs with streamer and nymph setups.
  • Sheep River: Low at 4.0 m³/s — focus on stealth in clear conditions. Avoid wading through visible spawning areas to protect potential cutthroat and bull trout redds.
  • Crowsnest River: Below normal at 9.2 m³/s; ideal nymphing conditions with light tippets. BWO and March Brown hatches are providing good surface activity in the afternoons.
  • Oldman River — Lower: Near normal flow of 39.5 m³/s supports go-to walleye tactics around structures; also suitable for pike using large spoons and deep-running crankbaits.

Weather Impact by Area

  • Bow Valley / Foothills: Expect temperatures around 7–22°C with moderate northwest winds gusting to 30 km/h. Wind may hinder dry fly presentations; nymphing or streamers are recommended.
  • Crowsnest Pass: With winds reaching up to 20 km/h WSW, angling strategies should focus on nymphing; aim for sheltered spots during peak wind conditions.
  • Central Alberta: Clear skies, milder temps 5–24°C. Light morning winds shifting to stronger southerly gusts in the evening — best time for pike on remote lakes is early morning or late afternoon.

Hatch Activity & Fly Fishing

  • Bow River — Calgary: BWO (#18-22) and grannom caddis hatches are active. Focus nymphing efforts on the mid-morning using Copper John (#14-16) and Pheasant Tail (#14-18).
  • Crowsnest River: BWO and March Brown hatches present excellent surface action mid-day; otherwise, conduct pre-hatch nymphing with Hare's Ear (#16) or Copper John (#14).
  • Streamer Tactics: High water conditions call for articulated Woolly Buggers and Clouser Minnows in deeper holes and at dusk.

Spin & Bait Fishing

  • Bow River — Lower: Target walleye with 1/8 oz jigs tipped with minnows around structure. Northern pike favor large spoons — focus on deeper pools and channel edges.
  • Stocked Ponds: Fresh stockings have occurred, and PowerBait or small spinners are highly effective along drop-offs near inlets.

Recent Stocking

Southern Alberta sees active stockings with notable updates at Sibbald and Mount Lorette Ponds. Employ PowerBait, small spinners, and worms to entice newly stocked rainbow and cutthroat trout, particularly around aerated sections.

Top Picks Today

1. Bow River — Calgary Blue Ribbon: Great for brown and rainbow trout; nymphing with Pheasant Tail (#16) under an indicator. Spin anglers should employ Rapala F5 for deeper edges.

2. Oldman River — Below Dam: Rainbows are active with BWO emergers (#18); spin anglers try inline spinners near shore eddies.

3. Pond Stocking Locations (Sibbald): Try PowerBait or small Blue Fox Vibrax spinners for recently introduced rainbows.

Safety & Regulations

  • River flows are unpredictable during runoff; always assess safety before wading.
  • Practice catch-and-release with bull trout in all Alberta waters, minimizing handling.
  • Some sections of rivers might be subject to seasonal closures — verify region-specific fishing regulations at albertaregulations.ca before venturing out.
